Archdale Debating Success
MLC School has once again performed at the highest level in Debating. On Tuesday 6 September 2016, the Grand Final of the Archdale Debating competition was held at SCEGGS, Dalinghurst. The general topic area for the Grand Final was Indigenous Affairs, and all teams went through a process of choosing between three topics. Six MLC School teams progressed through to the Quarter Finals and three teams progress to the Semi-Finals. Our Year 7A and Senior teams won, gaining a place to compete in the Grand Final.
The Year 7 team of Charlotte Bathgate, Claudia Bean, Gracelyn Dao, Lauren Millar and Mikaela Nguyen were remarkably cool and composed considering it was their first Grand Final experience. Their topic was a challenging one: ‘That we should have a set number of Aboriginal people employed in the police force’, and they had to argue the negative. Despite a very close and strong debate, MLC School was narrowly beaten by Kambala.
Our Senior team of Isabella Anderson, Claris Foo, Ella Finlay, Carma Jackson and Jasmine Todoroska were the ultimate Year 11 debating team and were victorious against Monte, arguing the affirmative for the topic, 'Indigenous communities should be responsible for sentencing Indigenous juvenile offenders'. It was a fantastic performance particularly after their win in the ISDA Debating Championship Senior B division in June this year. To win both of these prestigious competitions, from a pool of over 50 schools, is a great achievement. Congratulations to all students who competed.
